Step-by-step guide for Citrix License Server Installation

This is a step-by-step guide on how to install and configure the Citrix License Server required by most Citrix products such as XenDesktop, XenApp, AppDNA, Workspace Environment Manager.

Citrix License Server is made available as a Windows installable application which is the typical configuration and also as a Virtual Appliance (VPX) but as of this writing, it is only available for XenServer – no VMware vSphere or any other hypervisor option is available.  This guide details the Windows installation.

This guide assumes that you already have a Citrix account.  If not, you can create one or request a product trial in order to download products.  See links at the end of this post.

Logon to, click on Downloads and select Licensing.

License Server versions change every few months and newer versions AND license files may be required in order to support upgraded product versions.  Always confirm the required License version and License files (Subscription Advantage Date).

Expand License Server and select the “License Server for Windows“.

Click on Download File.

You will have to Accept the Download Agreement before the download starts.

The file is a zipped.  Download it and extract it.  Once extracted click on the CitrixLicensing.exe.

Check the “I have read, understand, and accept the terms of the license agreement” and click Next.

In this instance we select the default option for Location (adjust as needed) and click Next.

In this setup, we select the default values and click Next.

Be aware that if this License Server is in a separate network than your Citrix Delivery Controllers or other Citrix servers, these ports need to be allowed between networks.  For example, Citrix Delivery Controllers utilize port 8083 to check the License Server certificate.  If this port is blocked, then your Delivery Controllers will not be able to utilize this installation.


The newer versions of License Server provide the ability to automatically check and install subscription advantage licenses.  In our setup, we will select the “Automatically check and install Subscription Advantage renewal licenses when available” in order to minimize extra steps needed for updating licenses.  This may not be appropriate for your organization as the License Server may not have Internet access or you may want to have full control on how to update licenses.

Click Install.

You may choose any option to also launch the Console or the Manager and whether to join the Citrix Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Click Finish.

This completes the Citrix License Server installation.
